First two rules about firmware:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it: do not mess with or flash/upgrade/repair/fix the firmware unless absolutety necessary.
If you have a Sigmatel based player (use CheckUDisk to check this), back it up with the sigmatel firmware extractor and save it in a safe place. This is not software from sigmatel(at least with the STMP35xx based players below).
Download the filefixer program.
With the filefixer program in the same directory as the extracted firmware files run the program. (Best to use a copy of them)
Put the fixed files into the directory where you have the stupdater and the dlls. Update as normal.
